  1. I ran into this video elsewhere, yesterday, and I would redirect your “wow.” The amazing thing is not merely the “tent city,” or the fact that nobody is really talking about that population of defaulters. Portland has had a tent city for ten years. What is startling in that video is the idea that somebody, somewhere, believed that that fat nincompoop was the kind of person who could be counted on to repay a loan of greater than $100 value—or, at least, was willing to commit a bank to that belief. They probably also gave her a mortgage the payments on which would rise over time, as if she had not expressed her full economic potential doing whatever she does or does not do for money.

Call me anti-fat-ignorant, call me intolerant; I’m still right. The correction that is happening over here—it has been a long time coming.

  2. my “wow” was not directed anywhere in particular. interesting that there’ve been tent cities for a while. none in blighty that i know of. but then again america constantly surprises. its public face belies its realities in many ways. i remember seeing a documentary once on east st louis. it freaked me out.
